What to Bring to a Tennis Lesson: A Basic Checklist Without Anything Extra

A common question from beginners

Before stepping onto the court for the first time, many beginners worry: “What if I forget something important?” There is no need to worry — lawn tennis is simpler than it may seem at first. Basic equipment is enough to give you comfort and safety, and you do not need anything extra. This checklist works both for your first lesson and for regular training. You can pack everything in just 10 minutes.

Clothing and sportswear

Comfortable clothing and proper sportswear are the foundation of a good session, so you are not distracted by discomfort. Choose synthetic fabrics or cotton blends — they help manage sweat and do not restrict movement.

Clothing:

Shorts or a skirt (for women), sports trousers or shorts (for men), and a T-shirt or short-sleeved polo.

Shoes are especially important: a non-slip sole, good lateral support, and ankle stability help reduce the risk of injury on court. Do not wear running shoes — they can be slippery on a tennis court. It is better to choose a size with around 0.5 cm of extra room.

Racket and gear

For beginners, a medium-weight tennis racket (280–300 g) is a good starting point. If you are unsure, do not rush to buy one straight away — trial lessons often include equipment. Later, your coach can advise you on which racket is the best fit for your level.

You can also bring a few extras: wristbands, a cap, and spare socks — all of these are part of tennis gear and can make training more comfortable.

Water and small essentials

Water is essential for maintaining endurance and concentration: during one hour of active play, you can lose up to 1 litre of fluid. Bring a bottle of water with you in advance, ideally one with a straw so it is easier to drink on the move. A towel and a small backpack for your sports gear are also useful.
